Looking for better performance from Illustrator? Then take a look at these new babies from Apple. The new MacBook Pro and the new iMac have Apple's new Intel-based architecture.
But pay less attention to the speed of the actual processor and more attention to the highway it sits on. These new machines contain faster frontside bus speeds, and when it comes to apps like Illustrator, bus speed is as important (if not more so) than processor speed. A program like Illustrator must perform many actions in a linear format -- and because of that, it's not how fast your processor can get things done, but how quickly you can get data to and from the processor.
While Illustrator CS2 will only be running as a non-native application on Intel hardward (using Rosetta), the road for faster performance for Illustrator has been paved.... and I look forward to see a native version of Illustrator (undoubtedly, Illustrator CS3) in the future...

When they come up with a 17-inch version, I'll buy it. In the meantime, I need my big screen more than I need faster performance.
You see -- for me, it's just the opposite. My laptop is almost always plugged into a 20 inch screen (at home), or a huge projector (when I'm on the road doing demos)... so I actually would prefer something smaller (I currently use the 12in PBG4).
And at a demo, where I'm showing off the suite and dancing between several apps, I need the speed. Also, for recording videos, the faster bus allows for better recording (otherwise, the system can't keep up with the frame rate).
Well, my laptop is used mostly in two places: either sitting in a coffee shop with wireless access (that's where I am now), or sitting in my bed. In neither place would I want to lug along a monitor, but there's plenty of room for a big screen.
I don't even want to use any auxiliary input device because they limit portability. So all of my art is drawn by "finger painting" on the touchpad of my Powerbook.
Wow Teri -- I'm impressed. I always held your engineering talents in high esteem, but finger painting on a track pad?!? Now THAT's talent!
I can't wait to get my hands on one. I use my powerbook for 3 things. Mail, Web, and most importantly, compiling. If I can cut my compile times down by 30%, I'd be laughing.
