Pardon Our Appearance

Hi folks! I'm doing a little bit of blog maintenance today in the hopes of providing a better experience for all of my readers. I may even have a few things to announce that will interest some of you -- so stay tuned. If things are a bit messy around here over the next day or so, don't worry, I'll be smoothing them out as I go along :)

The colors you've chosen for the Google ads are remarkably similar to those chosen by fast food restaurants to encourage people to leave as quickly as possible ;) Maybe something a little less safety-orage would be more pleasing on the eyes?

I also usually prefer cool colors to warm ones for web sites. But my main complaint is the aspect ratio. I either visit web sites using my 17" MacBook (1680 x 1050) or an even larger desktop monitor, and it feels so wasteful of screen space when sites use only the center half of the window, with very wide blank margins on both the left and right. It also requires a lot more scrolling.

That kind of layout seems to be increasingly common with the spread of mobile devices. For someone who always uses a large screen, the wide screen layouts you saw 10 years ago were much more pleasing. Isn't there some way to set up the style sheets so that if the window is wide, it will make full use of that space?

I changed the color of the Google ads to something less glaring -- sorry for being so over zealous with the orange :)

Teri, it's certainly possible to switch my template to one that uses a liquid CSS attribute (so that the text scales in width as you make your browser window wider). The previous template I was using was 600 px across, and I've now modified the template to be 950 px wide -- which fits quite nicely on a 1024x768 display. I avoided the liquid template only because it was more work on my part and as always, I've been doing this in my spare time :)

My main goal was to give myself some more room so that I don't have to shrink down screen shots. I guess you can say that variable width columns have been deferred to Mordy's Blog 3.0 :)

BTW, I obviously used orange as my base color from Illustrator's icon -- and I used the color guide to generate analogous swatches for the additional colors.
