Mac OS X v. 10.4.8 update fixes certain CS2 oddities

After first seeing a post on InDesign Secrets, I downloaded the 10.4.8 update on my Intel-based MacBook Pro. The update fixes certain oddities that I've experienced when using Adobe CS2 applications (which currently run on Rosetta). Mainly, in InDesign CS2, numbers are usually displayed with up to 4 decimal places. But on the Intel machines, the numbers displayed with many more decimal places (up to 16 of them). Needless to say, it was difficult to identify values. Now, with the update installed, I'm happy to report that once again, decimal places are in their proper place. So while I'm still waiting to see those wonderful Adobe apps run in Universal Binary freedom, I can at least get my work done today without issue.

The issue of certain crashes happening in Illustrator (seldom [PARM] crashes) hasn't happened since the update, but I haven't been using it long enough to know if that problem is also solved by the update. Apparently, these were all Rosetta issues, and not Adobe issues (who knew?)...

Digg!

Unfortunately, the update seems to have introduced another serious -perhaps more serious- problem. When using any of the Pathfinder functions, be it from the pallet or as an effect, on a circular path, Illustrator crashes like there's no tomorrow...

Wow -- good find macfanguy! I was able to reproduce what you describe. Odd how it only happens with circular paths. I'll have to alert the authorities...

Yes, I've had the same thing happen when trying to use the pathfinder tool. Since it's one of the most used tool in Illustrator, it makes the program practically unusable. The only solution I've seen so far is to downgrade to osx 10.4.7

I have exactly the same problem.
Is there an other soultion or how can I downgrade to osx 10.4.7?

Apparently, the solution is to do the following:

1. Launch Illustrator CS2.
2. Close the Appearance Palette
3. Quit Illustrator.
4. Restart Illustrator.

Pathfinder should no longer cause a crash, and you can bring back the Appearance palette.

OMG Mordy! You are a genius!!!!
Thank you so much for saving my job as a designer. I use pathfinder for all my projects in Illustrator and for the past two months have been trying to get around the problem.

The Appearance Pallete trick should be broadcast/posted EVERYWHERE!!!

Yes, thanks Mr. Golding! My MacBook has been rendered useless ever since I've updated OSX. Thanks so much. I'll be posting this to my blog in hopes that it spreads around even faster.

As soon as I start filling a mesh with gradients the mesh becomes invisible. I can't see my points or control handles. I've had the same problem with regular paths becoming invisible. I'm running 10.4.6 on a Dual 1.42 PowerPC G4. HELP!!!

it works here! tnx ALOT!

Yup the pathfinder works but not in the effect-pathfinder scroll down window. You HAVE TO use palette instead. Go to window - palette and use that instead. Malc C

fantastic! worked for me! I now have this site bookmarked!

Anyone try to find something in Illustrator CS2? As soon as you press (cmd + F) Illustrator crashes. Heck, it crashes really weird. It doesn't even bring up a crash report. I think cmd+f should stand for "force quit" as it does it every time no matter the document open or even if you have no fonts installed.

You save me from nervous breakdown my path work again

the workaround doesn't work with me either, PLEASE HELP! I've tried it for like a million times...and guess, it worked once, but not the other times.

hey guys i had the same issue. try the hiding the appearance menu technique then also throw your illustrator .plist in the trash before restarting.
worked for me! (you'll find that in user/library/prefs/

I just bought the new MacBook Pro and I am having a problem with pathfinder. Every time I make a circle and put 2 lines over it and then use the align tool to get it centered so i could cut it into 4 "pie" slices, i use the pathfinder tool and illustrator crashes. It seems like i just found another way to close Illustrator.

Like the majority of other commenters, I use Illustrator and the Pathfinder palette a lot. Thanks, mordy, for sharing that solution.

I have tried all the suggestions with Illustrator CS2 on my 2nd Gen Intel Based Mac Book Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Mac OSX 10.4.8 and still it is crash crazy. I am curious to know what versions of OSX and what type of computers everyone is using that has had the problem fixed. I have turned off the Appearance, restarted, trashed the .plist with no luck. This bug is definitely not fixed. Anybody else with the same configuration as I please let me know how or if you have this working. Thanks

Is their a quit uninstall for Illustrator CS2?

Anonymous said...

Ok, I think the issue is actually with the Appearance pallette. Turn it off and you should be able to use the Pathfinder. Not sure why, but the fix only works when the Appearance pallette is turned off.

I too am tired of these stupid Adobe/Apple conflicts. I wish the inept programmers at Adobe would get on the collective stick so I can get on with my work day.

im using cs2 illustrator, put a clipping mask around all my layers to hide anthnig outside the art tile. so i could get a better look at my pages. i went in and released the clipping mask the next day to make some changes to the other layers and they are now all empty. everything has been flattened into one layer. so i clicked the arrow next to the layer, and saw the paths. i have been working with those now.

the problem is now, i have lost visibilaty of the handles, points or whatever theyre called. i tried some of the suggestions listed but none of its working. im on a pc. i have a LOT of work into this project and i feel like im loosing control of where its going.

pls help!!!!
